Male masturbation. Sex toys. Breaking taboos.

There must be a thousand terms for male masturbation, like:

  • Jacking off
  • Beating the meat
  • Jerkin’ the Gherkin
  • Chokin’ the chicken
  • And many, many more

Men use sex toys for the first time…

Here’s an entertaining video, interviewing guys who used a sex toy for the first time. Sound familiar?

YouTube video

Yes, we all do it. Yes, we often talk about it. There’s still a stigma, however – and it’s not what you’re thinking.

Despite the fact that men make more jokes out loud about “jacking off” than anyone else in the room, it’s still sort of taboo to bring up HOW. Especially if that ‘HOW’ has to do with a prostate toy, or other male masturbation device.

The Lelo Loki Wave. An AWESOME prostate toy.
The Tenga Flip Hole. One of my favorite male masturbators.

Crack as many jokes as you’d like about “jerking it” and inevitably get some laughs, but watch the room tighten up when you mention an artificial vagina.

We’ve made huge strides in terms of sexual freedom in our culture. But there’s still a sort of worried, nervous reaction to the idea of a man using anything but his hand. Throughout the years, vibrators and dildos have become so normalized for women that they openly talk about it in public. Perhaps being due to the overt sexualization of women and their sexual identities.

Whatever the case may be, it’s a little “weird” to talk about a man sticking a vibrator up his ass, and it doesn’t quite make sense.

The sex toy industry grosses around (or over) $15 billion in annual sales every year, with a massive ratio of that number being sales of male-based adult toys, devices and paraphernalia. As the shrouded curtain of shame progressively gets lifted off the concept of human sexuality, we’re eventually heading towards natural liberation and acceptance.

no shame

Bottom line – there’s nothing shameful about enjoying a good wank. With each and every day passing, it becomes more and more socially acceptable and mainstream, so let’s explore the world a little deeper.

Aside from the obvious erotic pleasures, male masturbation can actually be a beneficial and scientifically healthy activity.

Studies have shown that masturbation and orgasm have LOTS of benefits. Here are just a few:

  • Boosts the human immune system,
  • Relieves tension and stress by lowering blood pressure
  • Provides a safe release of sexual tension without repercussions or performance anxieties
  • Helps fight depression by releasing the mood-enhancing hormones serotonin and dopamine
  • It also releases oxytocin

And for pleasure purposes 🙂

In a nutshell

It regulates a man’s emotions and can also help maintain a healthy relationship with his partner. Fantasies can be relieved, tensions can be eased and the urge to cheat can be squashed. Aside from being about sexual gratification, masturbating can also provide a man a routine of stress relief by clearing his head before work, relieving stress of the day, helping him get to sleep or even eradicating adulterous thoughts with another partner.

Men over 50 who regularly “clear the lines” decrease the risk of prostate cancer by a considerable number, and even help lower the chances of diabetes and insomnia. Let’s face it, when it comes to guys, it’s not always about sex. As most can attest to, it’s just something we do, sometimes we just have to get it out of our system.

No matter the motivation

It’s no secret that men masturbate – and sales reports indicate there’s a huge load (no pun intended) of male toys being sold every year – so they’re out there, and they’re getting used. Why aren’t we talking it up a lot more?

Just in the same way that women sometimes crave being penetrated and require the use of dildos or toys during their alone-time, men don’t always feel satisfied by using their hand alone. The mimicked feel of a vagina, butt or mouth can make any masturbation session more fulfilling and gratifying.

Some men enjoy the feel of their prostate being stimulated or enjoy anal play and wish to use a toy or device to aid it. And you know what – that’s great! There’s nothing wrong with it. Masturbation shouldn’t be restricted to the power of the hand if the person wants more.

There’s a toy for almost any fetish or desire – from the basic and discreet “pocket pussy” to full silicone replications of another person with lifelike orifices to advanced gadgets that whir and spin and are programmed to do the wonderful and wild.

So, how often do we wank?

The Kinsey Institute, at Indiana University, has done extensive research on this very topic.

Heterosexual or homosexual, there’s no difference

Our basic desires remain the same at the core of things. We all desire to orgasm and ejaculate, but sometimes the process needs a little spice and flavor. Different needs, different kinks and different situations all warrant different things, but as long as no one is getting hurt in the process – we should openly accept it out loud!

Don’t get us wrong – we’ve come a long way in terms of social acceptance. Hell, in the Victorian Age, many doctors believed and warned that masturbation was a disease, prescribing and instituting a device called a ‘Jugum Penis’ (a terrifying metal ring with spikes much like a dog collar, that would tear up the flesh of the shaft if masturbation was attempted).

Even big box stores are selling sex toys

Being that even world-leading stores like Walmart and Walgreens discreetly stock entry-level sex toys cleverly marketed as “personal massagers” in stores worldwide today – we’ve definitely made a lot of progress.

We no longer (as a whole) believe that taking care of yourself is either an offense or unhealthy – and we’ve certainly long determined that there isn’t anything psychologically strange about fulfilling your own urges.

We’re still not 100% open to it

All in all, it’s not that talking about masturbation makes you a social pariah. It’s just that, at this point in time, we’re not 100% open to the idea of men using toys, artificial vaginas, massagers. Or anything outside of the “norm”, for that matter.

But with a massive record of sales, there are plenty of men that ARE open about it (do a little investigation online, there’s plenty of sexually-vocal men that have no problem freely speaking about their own identity and desires). We just haven’t reached a fully embraced world quite yet.

The natural beauty of masturbation

Although a cultural bias toward women’s self-sexual nature still exists, there’s natural beauty in human masturbation no matter the gender. A man’s session can be an extremely improved affair with the introduction of toys.

Exploration, cultural acceptance and open enjoyment should be nothing anyone should ever be ashamed of.
