Do roulette systems actually work? (the Martingale question)

Everyone's got a mate with a 'system' for roulette, double your bet after a loss, that sort of thing. Does Martingale or any of them actually work, or is it nonsense?

Nonsense, sorry. No betting pattern changes the house edge, every spin is independent. Martingale (doubling after losses) feels clever until you hit a losing streak, then you're either betting enormous sums to claw back peanuts or you smash the table maximum and can't double again. The streak that wipes you WILL come, it's just a matter of when.

The maths is brutal and simple: negative expected value on every single bet, and no sequence of negative-EV bets adds up to a positive. The one thing that genuinely changes your odds at roulette is the wheel itself, single-zero (European) has roughly half the house edge of double-zero (American). Play single-zero and skip the systems.
