How does a slot RNG actually work - are they rigged?

Genuine question because I'm a sceptic... how do we actually KNOW these slots aren't rigged to pay you nothing once you've deposited? What stops the casino just flipping a switch?
 
Fair question. Every spin is decided by an RNG - random number generator - that's running constantly, the moment you hit spin it grabs the current value. At a LICENSED operator the casino can't reach in and alter outcomes per player, the game logic lives with the provider (Pragmatic, NetEnt etc.), not the casino skin. And independent labs like eCOGRA and iTech Labs test the RNG and verify the published RTP. The edge is baked into the RTP openly, it doesn't need to be rigged on top.
 
That's the key really - the safeguard is sticking to licensed, tested sites. An unlicensed dodgy site running pirated games? All bets off. A licensed one with the eCOGRA seal and games from the big providers? That's about as safe as it gets. The house edge does the work for them legally, they don't need to cheat.
 
Yeah the RTP IS the catch. It's not rigged, it's just maths in their favour over time. Play licensed, check for the testing seals, you're fine.
