What does slot volatility / variance actually mean?

Games keep saying 'high volatility' or 'medium variance' and I just nod along like I know what it means haha. What's it actually telling you?

It's basically how the wins are distributed. Low volatility = lots of small frequent wins, steady session, rarely a big one. High volatility = long dry spells punctuated by the occasional big hit. Same RTP can feel completely different depending on variance. It's the single most important thing for how a session FEELS.

And you match it to your bankroll. High volatility needs a BIGGER buffer because you have to survive the dry stretches to reach the payouts. Small bankroll + high variance slot = you're done in ten minutes. Pick low/medium if you want to actually play for a while.

Can confirm. Loaded a high-variance Pragmatic slot with $40 once, gone before I'd finished my coffee. Stick to medium if you ask me.
