What is a Megaways slot? Keep seeing the word everywhere

Half the slots now say 'Megaways' in the title. Is that a brand, a feature, a type of game? What does it actually mean?
 
It's a game mechanic, originally from Big Time Gaming, that other studios license. Instead of fixed paylines the number of symbols per reel changes every spin, so the ways to win vary wildly, up to 117,649 at the top end. That's where the name comes from.
 
And they're nearly always high variance, mate. Big swings, the reels reshuffle every spin so it feels chaotic. Bonanza was the original one everyone played. Loads of them on the NZ sites now. Fun but treat them like the high-volatility games they are.
