Recently, a younger acquaintance of mine asked me for some life advice.
We were both in the office and he told me all about his crush, the one who got away, he called her. How he suspects she might have feelings for him, and how he should handle the situation.
Being a younger man, he is a bit shy and nervous at the idea of rejection.
I told him it's inevitable that you will be rejected - multiple times in life, and for many other reasons besides romance.
Then I told him, I do think you should ask your crush how she feels. But in case she doesn't feel that way about you, I encourage you to move on. Find someone you are more compatible with. Don't become a lonely depressive, when you are in the prime of your life and have so much to offer.
He begrudgingly admitted he understood what I was saying. Then he asked me how to find a girlfriend, especially because he is neurodivergent.
I told him there is no golden rule or brilliant strategy. It's just a matter of putting yourself out there, making more friends, and communicating your romantic interest, rather than keeping it a secret.
He accepted that.
But I would be curious to know if anyone here has advice on how a person can get a girlfriend, even if they're not that smooth at dating.
